Posterous has been acquired by Twitter. Like Tweetie, TweetDeck, and GoWalla before, the likely outcome of this is that the Posterous platform will be taken over by the least talented members of the Twitter team, so that the new talent acquisitions can get integrated into working on the Twitter core product.

For Twitter, this is a great business move. For the Posterous crew, I’m sure this is a great move too — they’ll keep working in the social media space, using the experience they’ve gained, and the core Twitter product will improve thanks to their efforts.

But for the Posterous product, this is unlikely to turn out to be anything but an evisceration. Twitter wants to control the links in to all the content — see the ’t.co' url scheme — and they want to be the central point of contact for the content, so that they can monetize that data. And who can blame them? Getting increasingly-savvy users to click through your service means you get to learn about them, and that’s where the money is.

Anyhow. If the Posterous service starts to lose features, and stops having its bugs fixed, then you know it’s becoming Twitterized…and for me, at least, it’ll be time to move on.
